Quick guide — assign a fixed VMware ESXi license key

  1. Prerequisites
  • UI shows stale data; key actually applied but not yet reflected due to cache. (Less common but possible.)
  1. Go to the Broadcom VMware portal (formerly VMware Customer Connect).
  2. Create a free account (no credit card required).
  3. Look for “Free Hypervisor” under downloads.
  4. Register for the free license – you will receive a perpetual, non-expiring license key.
  5. This key is fixed – it never expires, but it limits you to 8 vCPUs per VM and no vCenter.
  • You have collected logs and tried supported steps but the host still will not accept a valid key.
  • There are error messages in hostd/vpxd logs indicating internal failures.
  • You suspect configuration corruption or a product bug affecting licensing persistence. Provide: ESXi and vCenter versions/builds, relevant logs, exact steps attempted, timestamps, and license key metadata.

Navigate to Licensing: Go to Manage > Licensing in the side navigator.
