The Upper Floor Penny Barber and Syren De Mer Top
Penny’s apartment—the upper floor—became both studio and refuge. The top-floor windows framed the city skyline, but mostly they framed each other: Syren’s silhouette against a swath of sail-colored fabric, Penny bent over a pattern with an expression of concentration that could be fierce and soft all at once. They argued about approach—Syren wanted the wild sweep of an oceanic motif; Penny insisted on a structural backbone so the design would wear well. They compromised by embroidering a row of little shells along the hem, then letting a riot of painted waves break over the bodice. the upper floor penny barber and syren de mer top
