This paper examines Tamil kamakathaikal (folk narrative motifs centered on erotic, familial and domestic longing) through three recurrent archetypes: Amma (mother), Magan (son/lover), and Patti (grandmother/elder woman). It situates these narratives within Tamil literary history, oral traditions, caste and gender politics, ritual contexts, and modern media adaptations, arguing that these figures function as sites for negotiating desire, patriarchy, social transgression, and cultural memory.
In traditional Tamil families, the relationships between Amma, Magan, and Patti were often governed by strict social norms and expectations. The mother-son bond was considered sacred, with the mother often being the primary caregiver and nurturer.
