PS2 Slim Schematic Diagram — UPD (Draft Post)
I'm working on a post about the PS2 Slim schematic diagram (UPD variant) and wanted to share an initial draft. Feedback welcome.
The PS2 Slim (also known as the PS2 Slimline) is a redesign of the original PlayStation 2 console, released in 2007. Here is a brief overview of the PS2 Slim's internal components and a discussion on the schematic diagram:
The motherboard contains:
GH-051 / GH-052 (SCPH-770XX): Known as the "Deckard" revision, these moved toward a more integrated ASIC design.
- Update (UPD as abbreviation): A revised version of a schematic diagram. Because Sony released multiple motherboard revisions (GH-035-01, GH-036-01, GH-040-01, etc.), a "UPD" schematic is a corrected or later revision of the original service manual.
- UPD Chip (µPD): This is the most common hardware search. The NEC µPD series are power management ICs (PMICs). Specifically, the µPD9945 and µPD9952 are voltage regulator chips found on the PS2 Slim motherboard. When these fail, you get a "green light but no picture" or the console instantly shuts off.
A. The "Dragon" Chipset (EE+GS)
Unlike the Fat PS2, which had separate CPU and GPU, the Slim schematic shows these combined into one BGA (Ball Grid Array) package.
Important components and test points
- Graphics Synthesizer (GS): A custom-designed GPU that handles graphics rendering.
- Texture Mapping Units (TMUs): Handle texture mapping and address calculations.
- Pixel Shaders: Perform pixel-level calculations for graphics rendering.
