Abstract This paper explores the phenomenon surrounding the search query "Pokémon HeartGold GBA ROM." While no official commercial release exists under this title, the term refers to a prominent category of video game modifications (ROM hacks). By reverse-engineering the 2004 title Pokémon FireRed, independent developers have created unauthorized ports of the 2009 Nintendo DS title Pokémon HeartGold for legacy hardware.
