Title: Technical Assessment and Repair Procedures for the Petzl Myo XP (2021 Context): Addressing Contact Strip Degradation and Component Failure
- Symptoms: The light flickers when moved; the unit fails to power on despite fresh batteries; the battery indicator LED (on the battery case) does not light up.
- Cause: Leakage from alkaline batteries or moisture ingress causes oxidation (white/green powder) on the contact strips. The factory coating on the negative strips is thin and prone to scratching, leading to high-resistance points.
- Remove the 3x AAA holder (or rechargeable pack).
- Look for green/white crust. Apply vinegar to a toothbrush and scrub the contacts.
- Rinse with distilled water. Dry completely.
- If a contact spring is broken, you cannot buy official replacements – but a standard 3x AAA battery holder from an electronics store can be wired to the two input pads (red/black) inside the lamp.
- Replacement LED: Cree XP-G2 or XP-L on a 10mm MCPCB (neutral white recommended)
- Thermal paste (Arctic Silver or generic)
- 3D printer for hinge replacement (STL files available on Thingiverse – search “Petzl Myo XP hinge”)
- Replacement rotary switch: Bourns PEC11R-4215F-S0024 (similar spec, requires modification)
