The African sun beat down on the dusty red earth of the reserve, but back in New York City, the dream was very different. It was a dream of concrete, steam vents, and the comforting smell of stale pretzels.
After attempting to return to New York’s Central Park Zoo, the four protagonists—along with King Julien, Maurice, the penguins, and the chimpanzees—hijack a crashed airplane they repair. Their flight ends in disaster, crash-landing in the savannahs of Africa. There, Alex is reunited with his biological parents, Zuba (the alpha lion) and Florrie, but struggles to live up to his father’s expectations of ferocity. Meanwhile, Marty discovers a herd of zebras all identical to him, triggering an identity crisis; Melman, believing himself dying, becomes the self-appointed healer of a hippo herd; and Gloria finds romantic attention from a suave hippo named Moto Moto. The villainous lion Makunga schemes to overthrow Zuba, leading to Alex’s exile.
