In the center of the room was a pedestal, and on the pedestal lay a map rolled in oilskin—no ordinary cartography but a living thing of inked lines that shimmered like veins. Around the pedestal, the floor hosted a ring of shallow bas-reliefs depicting a ladder, a door, a spiral.
