How to Reseal a Fixed Window
Tools & materials
- Utility knife or razor blade
- Putty knife or scraper
- Painter’s tape
- Caulk gun
- Exterior-grade silicone or polyurethane window sealant (paintable if needed)
- Backer rod (for gaps >1/4")
- Rags and solvent (isopropyl alcohol or mineral spirits per sealant instructions)
- Ladder or step stool (if needed)
- Safety glasses and gloves
6. Tool & Finish
- Smooth immediately: Dip finger in soapy water (silicone) or spit (latex) and run along bead.
- Or use a caulk finishing tool for consistent concave shape.
- Remove painter’s tape while sealant is still wet.
Step 5: Tool the Bead Wet your finger with soapy water (or use a plastic spoon). Gently run it over the caulk to press it into the gap and smooth it out. Remove the painter's tape immediately before the caulk skins over.
