Bitmap Viewer — Esko

Overview

Esko Bitmap Viewer is a specialized software tool from Esko, designed for prepress and packaging production workflows. It provides accurate display, inspection, and comparison of raster images (bitmaps) used in packaging artwork, enabling prepress operators, quality controllers, and designers to validate image integrity and color fidelity before plate-making or digital printing.

Seamless Printing: Check for "breaks" in continuous designs like wraps or labels.

| Feature | Description | | :--- | :--- | | 1-bit TIFF Support | Renders black/white bitmap data without anti-aliasing for accurate dot representation. | | Zoom & Pan | Seamless zoom from 1% to 32,000% (actual pixel grid) for inspecting individual halftone dots. | | Measurement Tools | Rulers, distance calipers, and dot area calculation (percentage coverage). | | Screen Angle/Ruling Check | Overlays angle and frequency data; verifies correct separation angles (e.g., C 15°, M 75°, Y 0°, K 45°). | | Pixel Info Panel | Shows exact X/Y coordinates, gray value (0 or 255 for 1-bit), and dot status. | | Layer Overlay | Compare two bitmap layers (e.g., Cyan vs. Black) to detect misregistration or moiré. | | Defect Marking | Annotate bitmap errors (holes, bridges, satellites) directly for correction. | bitmap viewer esko

Workflow Integration: Often provided through Esko Automation Engine or as part of the Imaging Engine installer.

That’s why the Esko Bitmap Viewer remains a cornerstone tool in the prepress toolkit. Bitmap Viewer — Esko Overview Esko Bitmap Viewer

The 1-Bit Challenge

When a file is processed by a RIP (Raster Image Processor) for output, it is converted from a PostScript or PDF format into a 1-bit bitmap. In this format, a pixel is either "on" (ink) or "off" (no ink). Standard image editors struggle to interpret the screening data embedded in these files. 7. Known Limitations & Workarounds

| Limitation | Workaround | | :--- | :--- | | Cannot edit individual pixels (only whole objects) | Use Esko’s DotEdit module (separate license) for pixel-level deletion/addition. | | Slow initial load of > 4 GB TIFFs | Enable “Fast Preview” mode (reduced resolution thumbnail) in ArtPro+ preferences. | | No batch comparison of multiple TIFFs | Use Automation Engine’s Bitmap Compare smart name tool. |
